Four medals on Plantarium 2005
We are very proud to announce that on PLANTARIUM 2005, an Arboricultural Trade Fair, Boskoop, Holland, four medals have been awarded to our nursery for the latest clematis hybrids bred by Szczepan Marczyński.
The committee, appointed by Koninklijke Vereniging voor Boskoopse Culturen, has granted two gold medals for Clematis ‘Jerzy Popiełuszko’ and Clematis ‘Lech Wałęsa’, a silver medal for Clematis ‘Solidarność’, and a bronze medal for Clematis ‘Polonez’.
The PLANTARIUM 2005 fair and all 86 plant novelties selected for the show have gained big interest of visitors and journalists.
Clematis ‘Jerzy Popiełuszko’ – gold medal
Large (13-15 cm in diameter) silky white flowers with coffee anthers on white filaments are borne profusely over a long period, from May until October. It reaches 1.2-1.5 m of height. It climbs by means of twining leaf petioles and is suitable for growing over fences, arbors, trellises, stakes and other garden supports.
Makes a good container plant. It can also clamber through natural supports e.g. deciduous and coniferous shrubs that don’t require hard pruning. Provides a wonderful display when planted against a dark background.
Clematis ‘Lech Wałęsa’ – gold medal
Large (20 cm in diameter) pale blue-purple flowers are darker at the margins, while the interior of the tepal is almost white and a central tuft of stamens a yellow-white. Wavy edges and recurving tips of the tepals give the plant an unusual appearance.
It blooms abundantly and over a long period, starting in June and continuing through October. Moderately growing (2-2.5 m), it climbs using leaf petioles. It’s best grown in a wind-sheltered position, against a dark background. Suitable for fences, arbors, trellises, stakes and other garden supports, as well as containers.
Clematis ‘Solidarność’ – silver medal
Large (16 cm in diameter), vivid red velvety flowers with a lighter bar along the center of the tepals can sometimes have irregular white spots. Deep red anthers on yellow-white filaments.
The bloom is abundant and long-lasting, from May to September. A compact (1.5 m) vine that climbs using leaf petioles. Useful for fences, arbors, trellises, stakes and other garden supports.
Clematis ‘Polonez’ – bronze medal
Wine-red textured flowers a lighter bar and yellow anthers. A healthy, free flowering vine that will tolerate moderate soil but needs a sunny site to perform best.
Moderately growing (2-2.5 m), it climbs using leaf petioles and is particularly useful for growing over small trees or shrubs, arbors and other supports. Makes good ground cover.
