A popular self-clinging variety with numerous adhesive pads at tendrils’ ends that enable the plant to climb over smooth surfaces. Leaves compound, consisting of 5 elliptical lobes, pointy and dentate, dark green lustreless on the upper side and light green turning scarlet in autumn underneath. Unassuming, yellow-green flowers blossom in July–August. Fruit – small purple-black waxy berries – are set on red stalks. Rather strong-growing vine reaching 10-20 m (1-2 m a year). Entirely frost hardy, undemanding, healthy. Particularly useful for growing over buildings, walls and fences but it is also suitable for training over arbours, pergolas and other garden supports. It may be cultivated in balconies or as a ground cover.
